This is a request for thoughts, ideas, references, etc. I've already
posted once, but I've widened the distribution this time. Please
consider the following points and email me any thoughts you might have
on any or all of them.
1. I am about to embark on a Master's thesis.
2. I want to investigate the area of Strategic Planning for
New Technology in Information Systems (technology in a
wider sense to include hardware, software, and
'organisation').
3. The research will be carried out in New Zealand ('cause
that's where I am!).
4. Case studies could be taken from NZ universities (or
perhaps tertiary educational institutions) except that
I suspect that they have never done planning of this
type (flames gratefully received!).
5. Alternatively case studies could come from the big, bad
'real' world.
6. Is anyone aware of any related work?
7. How does an organisation plan for new technology when they
don't know what it is?
8. Can an organisation plan for new technology based only on
a conceptualisation of what might be?
9. Why would an organisation wish do do this?
10. Is an organisation that plans for new technology (whether
or not their plans always reach fruition) a better
performer than one that does not? In other words, is
there a competitive advantage to be gained by planning
for new informations systems technology?
I look forward to hearing from anyone who cares to comment on any
point raised above (or anything else for that matter!).
Many thanks in anticipation.
John
