Subject: IRIS 16 -- Call for papers
Second Call for Contributions
16th IRIS
Information Systems Research Seminar
in Scandinavia
7 - 10 August 1993
Copenhagen, Denmark
Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS)
IRIS is an annual working conference for Scandinavian researchers within
Information Systems. All participants have to contribute with a paper,
participate in a panel or arrange a workshop. The conference will focus on
5 topics which were proposed by the participants of the 15th IRIS in 1992.
Each topic will be discussed in working groups consisting of 6-8 persons.
Position papers should not exceed 4-5 pages (1.500 words), and full papers
should not exceed 15 pages (5.000 words), everything included. The
conference topics are:
Open Systems, Flexibility and Tailorability
The apparently growing supply of, and market for, standard or semi-standard
computer systems raises a number of questions: Is it at all possible to
build flexible standard computer systems? What are the experiences of
adapting, maintaining and using a standard computer system in an
organisation? Does the situation call for new methods in systems
development? Are we facing a reorganisation of the software industry, where
new computer systems are developed in software houses, while "in-house"
systems departments become responsible for adaptation, installation and
maintenance?
Empirical Studies of Design Practice
If we want to improve design practice we must, first of all, acquire a more
comprehensive understanding of the work processes of real-life design and
programming. How is systems development organized and how do systems
designers actually use methods and tools? How important are the designer's
skill and know how and what role does communication and collaboration play?
What are the differences between different development contexts?
Scandinavian Approaches
In recent years many ideas for design and implementation of computer based
systems originally presented under the headings "The Collective Resource
Approach" or the "Scandinavian Approach" have been proposed in a new
context, that of "participatory design" or "cooperative design". Are the
approaches alike, or are there fundamental differences in underlying
motive, operative context of the application of the ideas, etc. that need
to be reconciled? One can also ask: Do the Scandinavian approaches have any
future? And if so, in which context?
System development education
Teaching system development is not a trivial task. Theories and methods are
often difficult to relate to without "real life" experience, and industrial
size problems become elusive when shrunk to classroom scale. What to teach
and how? How to bring "real life" problems into the classroom? How to
balance theories versus methods? Presentations and evaluations of
curricula. Success and horror stories.
Professional Code of Ethics
The ethical dimension of our profession is important, but do we pay
attention to it? How can we research into this area? How can and should we
teach ethical issues to computer professionals? ACM has proposed a set of
ethical rules for computer professionals, and the rules have recently been
changed. How do we as Scandinavian researchers evaluate these rules? What
are the alternatives?
NOTE: For those of you who feel unable to submit a contribution on any of
the above mentioned themes, but who would like to participate in the
Conference, it is still possible to make a contribution on more general
topics in Informations Systems Research. Such miscellaneous contributions
will be collated into a sixth RopenS working group category at the
Conference.
Please note that your contribution will be evaluated by the editors of the
Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems. If you do not want such an
evaluation, please inform the organizing committee beforehand.
The Scandinavian Journal is interested in other Scandinavian contributions
than those presented at this yearUs seminar.
You are invited to submit your contribution to the following address: The
Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems, Department of Mathematics and
Computer Science, University of Aalborg, Frederiks Bajers Vej 7, DK- 9220
Aalborg /, Denmark.
Key Dates
1st of February: Deadline for submission of abstracts or proposals for a
panel session, workshop or other activity together with a letter
of interest (preferable by e-mail).
1st of March: Notification of acceptance.
1st of June: Deadline for submission of papers, registration, and
payment.
1st of July: The proceedings will be mailed.
