Can anyone send me (please!) - references to publications - text of your own institution's guidelines regarding the problems of assessing theses (particularly Honours theses) which have a substantial software development component? I am particularly interested in the advice given to students on the proper balance between theory development (including literature review), the software development itself, and the evaluation processes that the thesis should document. My other main interest is in the guidelines given to examiners. Do they see the software in operation at all? If so, does the student demonstrate it to them (and what about examiner anonymity above the Honours level?), or do they simply get a copy and struggle on? I suppose that similar problems could occur in other disciplines than IT-related ones - anything, in fact, where the research has a product other than the thesis itself. Any help will be appreciated!
