Pioneer LD-V8000 problems (help!)

Does anybody know why the LD-V8000 I'm using is giving me the TM
format after the last instruction (but not the previous three in FR)?
Apologies if this is covered in the User's Manual; I'm only working
from the Operation Instructions.  Pioneer hasn't sent me one (after
four requests).

Even if I send "FR" instructions, I still get the same "02957" back.
Is this a defective player?
