It seems that Pioneer only added the barcode reader and the Bar N Coder
software as an afterthought, since the software is difficult to use and
doesn't allow the flexibility that's necessary for educational products.

Thus, we've developed a Hypercard-based word processor that allows you
to write your documents like you usually would, using whatever formats you
like to use, AND lets you create and insert barcode commands directly into 
your document. You can print these documents on any dot matrix, ink jet, 
or laser printer. All Pioneer barcode commands are supported.

there's a good article about this product.
