Any info on reading or writing to CD-ROM?

I am looking for a book or other informative material about reading
and writing tracks of a CD-ROM. Can I do it with BIOS only or do I
need DOS? Is it any different from reading and writing regular floppy
or hard disks?!
I Like to do this in C or C++, if there is any good library that can
read or write sectors/tracks of CD-ROM. If that is not
possible, I like to know about BIOS INT or DOS INT that does this.
Any good assembly books that talks about this subject?
With highest regards,
Babak Sehari.

You can't write to a CD-ROM. Just to remind, the RO part stands for "read-only". There is such a thing as a CD-ROM burner (for people with $many) which will write whole CDs at a time on special writeable blanks, but this is still write-once - you can't change it thereafter. [at a push, these will do multiple "sessions" on one CD, sequentially, but for technical reasons, you lose a number of megs per new "session" apart from whatever it is you want to write]. If you want to use one of these, I believe (being far too poor to own one myself!) that they generally need their own, proprietary software, which will probably be sold seperately to you for another $many. >YO! >-- >Erwin D. Just to remind, the RO part stands for |> "read-only". I think the original poster meant CD-R for writing and CDROM for reading. There already a couple of drives allowing for personal mastering of CDs. |> There is such a thing as a CD-ROM burner (for people with |> $many) which will write whole CDs at a time on special writeable |> blanks, but this is still write-once - you can't change it thereafter. Yes, the technology only allows for writing unto the disc once... |> [at a push, these will do multiple "sessions" on one CD, sequentially, |> but for technical reasons, you lose a number of megs per new "session" |> apart from whatever it is you want to write]. A new session would take about 9MB of space. But I've read in an article once that you could create new volumns instead which only take around 300KB of overhead (which is much better than 9MB). |> If you want to use one of these, I believe (being far too poor to own |> one myself!) But more often, the software is bundled with the drive when you buy it. I myself am on the lookout for any information of how to go about doing a CD writer software. Unfortunately, I haven't found any material discussing that nor the drive to test it. Maybe next year.... YO! -- Erwin D. Paguio http://rh.iist.unu.edu/~ep/ydeeps.html Pascal and ASM Enthusiast

I found a CD machine in my friend's school that writes CDs as well as
read it. So, I want to copy a few of his "public domain" CDs. In order
to this I would like to read the CD sector by sector and record it on
the hard drive. Then, write each sector on the same place on the
recordable CD. This way I can copy his CDs.
Of course, I need more info on this. For example is there a hidden
track on CDs like track 81 on floopies? Or how many tracks there is
on each CD? or how many bytes each sector holds?
With highest regards,
Babak Sehari

Actually to clear things up just a bit more : CD writeable drives have been plummeting in price for a while now, with a little searching you can pick one up for about $1500. -----BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK----- Version: 2.6.2 mQCNAzFZklgAAAEEAN8I7YhFyMeGs9UnMDrgTucql8eoeZ+QcRkpNbdbZnXOuRoK JmLY5Df3g4vtnbJR2nMvqPuLs7IjzYIk3vMO6wujr864a30BBOCGlKGSAmSpoY+9 URpvTxNaD1GcVWH+IjG8sXsHlHlbuAwAnXem3J//zqVw0bHLHLGAZ4Ad4QNBAAUT tB9Wb3l0ZWsgSmFybm90IDx2amFybm90QG1udy5uZXQ+ =5UT/ -----END PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----

Just about any CD creation software will let you read in a CD (usually cinsidered a master) and make an image of it on the HD for later use of duplication. You cannot use conventional techniques (as you would with floppy drives or hard drives) to just read a sector then write it out. Information is stored in a standard ISO format. Along with this (and although it isn't apparent by doing a directory of the CD) all of the information is actually stored in single sector on the CD (this is used to seperate the different ISO type for PC's, MAC's, Video and audio tracks. Writing to a CD can be VERY dependant on the drive itself. I would hope that the cd-burner came with some software for doing these types of operations. If you are really want to write your own software, you will most likly have to contact ISO to get the format information. As this information is copyrighted and is sold by the ISO (and it definatly can be VERY pricy dependying on the information in it), it is very doubtfull that you will find it anywhere on the net. If you are adament about copying public domain CD's and plan on duplication several over the course of time, I would look into getting Corel's CD creation software. Its a very complete package and will do exactly what you want. (I really recommend getting this software over writing it...it will probably be a LOT cheaper considering ISO prices and it won't take you several months and 30-40 test CD's to get it right). (also check of the duplication restrictions and/or licensing formation on shareware CD's and some information such as the installation programs or other special items may be copyrighted by the manufacturers and/or distributor of the CD).
