Shit, I grew up programming in TRS80 line numbered BASIC, moved on to PC based TurboBasic, then Professional BASIC (and that was a beautiful language after the previous two), and now am quite happy with the world of VB .NET. Nothing hard about it, it's just event driven and has a shitload more functionality. I'm quite happy with the evolution of BASIC even if it doesn't look a lot like BASIC any more. In fact if anything things are 1000 times easier. As a kiddy me and a friend wrote a BBS in TRS80 basic, it was fucking difficult, none of the tools were there, everything had to be written from scratch and there was no Internet to do your research on. The many pain-ridden months (that dragged into a year or two of rewrites to add functionality) would be compressed into a week or two with the tools, language functionality and research magic of the Internet available to us these days!
