"SHOULD I DUMP VISUAL BASIC?"

Hello:

I've been messing around with VB for a couple version releases now, and have
VB Pro 4.0 (32bit) now.

I've wrote a simple API call utility with it, and it runs slow on FAST
systems. Also, the Setup Wizard wants to pack 4MB of DLLs with this 15k util.

I used a couple stock controls (no sheridan/3D) on a form with a few buttons
with 2 lines of code behind them. The code calls a module I wrote with about
4 lines in it (the API goodies).

Now, I realize that I need to pack the VB40032.DLL (if I want to give it to
those that do not already have the driver), but why all the other drivers?

There seems to be a lot of overhead using VB. I'm not far along in my
programming efforts, but I know some fundamentals. I know I want portability,
speed and low overhead.

I've been told that Delphi allows a coder to pull certain things out of a DLL,
and even compile DLLs into the EXE.

I've spent a lot of money on VB (various releases, books, et cetera), so I
haven't just thrown it out. I do like the ability to make all the user
interface with the controls/tools (VBX/OCX et al), and it seems to be fairly
easy to learn BASIC . . .

Can you recommend somewhere for me to learn (perhaps on a web site) the pros
and cons of using one programming package over another (e.g. Visual C++,
Delphi, VB . . .)?

I'm really in need of some insight at this point. Again, this stuff doesn't
come cheap (as you know), and I'd really like to learn programming plus have a
great package to program with.

Thanks in advance for your much-needed advice!

Kind Regards,

Bernie Wilt
