No the problem isn't using the + for concatentation.  Even though "&" is the
preferred method the + will work.

Have you tried your solution?  It will give you a type mismatch error.

Try:

Workbooks.OpenText FileName:="I:\ncms\squares\" + cstr(i) + ".dat"
