Which programming language is more widespread in the PC world - is it Visual
Basic or Visual C++?

Which is easier to learn?

Thanks

There's no doubt in my mind that Visual Basic is easier to learn than VC++, it also offers
quicker app development for relatively simple applications and you don't need to sit twiddling
your thumbs while your apps are compiling. The user is better protected from their mistakes, the
syntax of the language is more readable and the product's cheaper.

On the other hand, VC++ offers a professional development environment that VB just doesn't match,
the langauge is much more flexible and powerful and you can create true executables. Visual C++
doesn't impose any limitations on what you can do. I think both products are great.

As for which has more users, my guess is that it's VB?

I don't have hard numbers on usage, but VB is SOOOO much easier to use.

You could write your first app in a week in VB and you wouldn't even
have a basic class done in VC++.

Next to Ada and Lisp, C++ is probably the hardest programming language
to learn that is in the mainstream.

So that means the answer is BASIC.

1. Many sources indicate there are now more VB programmers. Numbers range
from 3 to 5 million with an estimated 8.5 million programmers total (most
of the rest of whom are COBOL people).

2. VB programmers can generally make better money these days (oddly
enough, because good VC programmers are easier to find).

3. VB is easier to use, learn and maintain. A large-scale VB project done
by professionals will be much easier to maintain than any similar VC
project (I know; I've been closely involved in and even managed such
projects).

4. On the other hand, if you're just starting out, you'll end up being a
better programmer if you start with VC then switch to VB. I'll catch a
lot of flak for that, but when I'm hiring that's the kind of person I
prefer. Then I KNOW they know the Windows API and that they must have at
least a little bit of discipline (really in VC it isn't so much
"discipline" as it is "painful torture", but...)

From the talk around the programming circle, there Visual Basic is more
widespread than Visual C++ (or collectively C++ programming). This is,
however, no information as they are quite different products and
different in purposes. No comparision should be made.

Widespread? I can't believe it would (today) be anything but C++ !

I couldn't disagree more. Perhaps if you a procedual programmer
making the move to Object Oriented programming . . . but if you are
learning it as your first language, properly taught, C++ isn't any
more difficult than any other 'first' programming language. In fact
it is our experience that novice programmers succeed in accomplishing
more sophisticated tasks earlier in C++ that other languages we have
taught!

Lee,

According to what I have been told Visual Basic is the most popular
(in terms of units sold) development environment in the world.

I use both VC++, VB, and Access on a daily basis and find that VB is
easier than VC for general apps. However, VC++ lets you did much more
advanced development. So, if you are building general apps that the
use "Standard forms" or some things that can be provided by VBXs or
OCXs try Visual Basic or Access (if it DB oriented). If you need to
develop more advanced apps or are planning on shipping to markets
where speed and size are major concerns you may want to look at Visual
C++.

Have fun,

Jerry

Perhaps Visual Basic has sold more copies than any other
environment, including Visual C++, but I would say that there is more
development, especially serious development being done in C++ than VB.
When you think about what language to learn, and you get to C++, you
should consider that C++ includes Visual C++, Borland C++, Watcom C++,
etc, etc. Granted, Visual C++ includes a couple of utilities the others
don't have, but the core of the language is the same.

At the same time, C++ is much harder to learn. The payoff, in terms
of the power of the language, the money you'll make, etc, etc, is
correspondingly greater.
