Is there a function that can tell the date last modified out of the
filename in VB5?
If yes, what is it called and how is it used? Please describe from
begining to end.
Thanx in advance!
{I would also appriciate if replies get sent to my e-mail address too,
because due to the large amount of trafic to these newsgroup, I can't
afford to download all posts. Thank you.}

Your best bet is to use the FindFirstFile/FindNextFile API
This can give you :
File Creation Date
File Last Modified Date
File Last Accessed Date
Use FileTime to System Time to decode the dates returned.
There is also the GetFileTime API - but this requires opening the file
- not a good generic solution.

If you don't mind adding a DLL to your package (SCRRUN.DLL) you can
reference the Scripting Runtime Library. That gives access to the
FileSystemObject. Then use FSO.GetFile to get the file object. The file
object properties provide DateCreated, DateLastMod., file version, size,
etc......saving several pages of code.

A possible problem with this approach is that some users are so
security-conscious that they have installed without any scripting support
libraries. Yes, they have to go to "great lengths" to install everything
without the .DLLs, but it is possible, and some do so.
