At a recent Python workshop we discussed the fact that since Python has
a number of mailing lists (called SIGS, such as Matrix-SIG, GUI-SIG,
etc.) the traffic in comp.lang.python is lower. This is thought to be a
good thing, in general, but someone did raise the possibility that
people would judge the interest in the language based on newsgroup
counts.

Newsgroup counts would be correlated, positively or negatively, with the
number of newbies, number of users, number of people having homework in
that language, number of subtle points in the language, number of design
flaws in the language, presence or abscence of a user who is a vexaxious
litigant or net equivalent, external mailing lists, difficulty of
porting, number of platforms supported, number of journals devoted to
it, etc. I don't see that the raw numbers tell you much. There are
several groups I would be interested in but don't read due to
signal/noise problems.

BTW, Python and Eiffel are not lisp-family languages.
