5) Unix used / as a path separator (and, incidentally, came before dos).
   Dos 1.0 didn't support subdirectories and thus didn't *have* paths.
   They used / for a command-line switch indicator, much like - is in
   Unix.  When DOS 2.0 came out with hard disk support (for the whopping
   10MB disks!) they needed to come up with a path separator, but, oops,
   / was already taken, so they used \, rather than introducing a
   compatibility problem.  PRobably a dumb mistake.
