Does anyone know were to find LEDA source in a site in the US, i have
had a great deal of difficulty reaching mpi-sb.mpg.de from my side of
the atlantic.

I don't know of such site. I have downloaded LEDA source to Australia
several times, however. As well as number of other Aussies. And 
Australia is connected to the Internet via California, as far as I know.
So just choose appropriate time.
