When I was learning C, I started with learning the syntax from the AT&T C Programmer's Reference (those were the days...). Then I decided that a good project to start programming using C was to implement something I'd find useful, so I wrote an application to keep track of my records (y'know, music) and tapes. Ever since, when I'm learning a new language or a new database system, this is my favorite project, because of the many subtleties. For example, you should be able to keep track of records that are by one band and of records that have various artists (the tracks included, of course), and in addition, you'd like to know who played on that one record. So, if there's an outsider starring on a track, that should be tracked also. This gives you better understanding of how to create relations in the database, when you do that a number of times. And always, there is room for improvement: what about an orchestra conducted by some famous conductor playing Beethoven's Ninth? Or a shorter classic with some other by Mozart on side B of the record? But anyway, the first projects you do, try to figure out some program you'd find use for. This way, you'll end up with coding it and knowing what you're doing, and also with something useful, not just coding for coding's sake. Later, AriL -- All my opinions are mine and mine alone.
