I am going to do a series of small numerical problems in C or C++ to how it works. If I like C I am going to go to C in place of fortran. I would like to buy a very cheap, simple compiler for the PC. Anyone know where I might find one? MY programming interest is only in computational physics. (dont need any fancy gui stuff) Someone mentioned that 'Mix' had a cheap compiler but I could find them on the WEB and I dont know how to contact them. Any help is appreciated, Thanks Gus Hart UC Davis Physics Dept

PowerC can be purchased from Mix Software, 1-800-333-0330, list price $20, but only $16.00 for educational users. The debugger is sold separately. But I don't recommend it, unless you are on a very tight budget. It has problems handling f(x) where f is pointer-to-function (prefers (*f)(x)), and has problems with const too (const char *p; p=q <<-- complains about that even though p is not const, just *p). ...Rick perry@ece.vill.edu, http://www.ece.vill.edu/~perry [PGP] Dr. Rick Perry, ECE Department, Villanova University, Villanova, PA 19085 610-519-4969, fax: 610-519-4436, hm: 610-259-8734

Gus, Get the latest copy of djgpp's gnu C and C++ at http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/ Try it and you'll like it. Yours, -- Derrick Early early@finite.nrl.navy.mil

For doing small projects it was great and had very fast compile times.

For doing >small projects it was great and had very fast compile times. I too learned C using Mix ne ALCOR C on CP/M. It is an exclent product. Their phone number is 800-333-0330. Also be sure and get their debugger in many if not most respects it is the best debugger I have used. They also have and excelent collection of libraries including one on numerical methods with source that are very good and very inexpensive. Here's some info on Power C.
Requirements include:
* Dos 2.0 or later
* 320K of memory
* 2 floppies or hard disk
* Runs on a PC, XT, AT or PS/2 compatible machine
Prices are:
* Compiler - $19.95
* Debugger - $19.95
* Library Source Code - $10
* BCD Business Math - $10

djgpp's very good, and I use it happily. Unfortunately, it's neither
small nor simple. If you want something *really* simple, check a Simtel
archive for pcc (personal c compiler). It's an ancient K&R C compiler for
8086's. It'll compile to COM files only, so the object code length has to
be less than 64kB. But it's fast. Incredibly so -- my 486DX66 doesn't
even pause for breath compiling the demonstration programs. It's also
only a couple of hundred kB.
Just as a matter of interest, one of the demonstration programs is a game
of Caterpillar. I tried it out of interest. On my machine, it just went
flick! and exited. It was going through all three lives in about a tenth
of a second.
Machines *have* got faster, haven't they? :)
