Does anybody know of a good (even fair, if inexpensive) validation test
suite one might aginst a home grown 'C' compiler. I am aware of the Plum
Hall Validation Test suite but it is well out of my price range.

There's a suite for GNU gcc. Look for it at ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu.
I downloaded it once but don't remember the exact location. It's
GPL'd so it should be in your price range :-)
