The Scheme language standard (IEEE Std1178-1990) requires that tail-recursive procedures be executed iteratively: "Implementations of Scheme are required to be properly tail-recursive. This allows the execution of an iterative computation in constant space, even if the iterative compuation is described by a syntactically recursive procedure. Thus with a tail-recursive implementation, iteration can be expressed using the ordinary procedure-call mechanics, so that special iteration constructs are useful only as abbreviations." [Sec 1.1] I don't know offhand how specific the Haskell or ML definitions are on this subject. --Mitch -- Mitchell Wand College of Computer Science, Northeastern University 360 Huntington Avenue #161CN, Boston, MA 02115 Phone: (617) 437 2072 Internet: wand@flora.ccs.northeastern.edu Fax: (617) 437 5121
