Welcome to comp.lang.functional, a newsgroup devoted to the discussion
of functional programming and related topics.


As promised (on comp.lang.misc), here's a list of numbers of people
who voted from various areas.  Since this list was compiled using
commands like

  grep \.edu yes.from | wc
or
  grep \.edu yes.from | more

it's not the most accurate of lists.  In particular, many uucp sites
were doubtless left out, and some people were probably counted twice.
Note also that all but one of the .arpa votes were from yale.arpa, and
hence should probably go under .edu.  It's good enough to get a rough
estimate, at any rate, and the Americans are outvoted by the
non-Americans, though not by a huge margin.  But considering that (as
far as I can tell) a large majority of Usenet readership is American,
this probably is significant in saying that functional programming has
a much weaker foothold here than it does in the rest of the world.

david carlton, who is one of the few people at Harvard University who
even has heard of the term 'functional programming language'.  or at
least one of the few who cares.  sigh.
