Is it possible with CORBA that a server invokes methods at client side?

Thanx

Yes, your client (in application terms), can act as server (in CORBA terms).

Hi Martin,

Yes this is possible. What you would effectively be doing is having your
server
invoke a callback to the client. To achieve this your client would have to
implement
an object which exposes an IDL interface, call this the callback object.
When building
your client and server applications remember to link in the server
skeletons for your
callback object into the client application, and the client stubs for the
callback object
into the server application.

HI,

Its possible for the server to invoke methods on the client by using CallBacks
in Corba ... when using callbacks the client should also expose a corba
interface on which the server can make calls to

Good Luck !

I have been programming with a couple different Smalltalk ORBs and
the issue of who is the client and who is the server and the idea
of a callback has never come up. At any moment an object can be a
client making a request and the next it will service a request,
(peer-to-peer). With a Java/C++ ORB is a server object making a callback
to a remote client different than a client making a remote invokation on
a server object?

I've had no trouble doing that in Java. You implement an interface on
the client side, create an instance, and pass the reference to it to the
server. The server can then invoke methods on that instance in the
client.

That works between a Java client application and a server, and using
VisiBroker with its Gatekeeper, it works between a Java applet and a
server. However, I can't get it to work between applet and server using
ORBacus. I also have not figured out how to make it work using the
built-in ORB in Netscape. I'm told by the OOC people that it isn't
possible without proprietary extensions.

The mechanisms are the same.

However, there is one area where you need to be a bit careful. If you
don't have callbacks, your client code can be implemented as single
threaded. With callbacks, you at least need to consider thread safety
and deadlock issues ... depending on what the callbacks do.

How do you get it to work between a Java applet and a server. I'm using
VisiBroker. I'm getting "netscape.security.AppletSecurityException". Please
help

Is it possible for the server to call a callback when my client is an applet?

Sure. However, firewalls complicate this issue very much and the answer gets a
lot longer and tends to be negative in a lot of cases :-)
