Reading a server file in Java

Can I read a file from the server in a Java Applet? If so how?

I want to display things like football results and league tables, but I
don't want to have to change the HTML files every time there is a new
result. I would rather change a data file and have an Applet read the
data and display it.

My ISP (demon) provides free web space but limits the use of CGI, so I
can't use CGI. I might be able to use SSI, but I don't know if the ISP
supports it and in any case it is a less flexible option. I think my
only real alternative is a Java Applet. Any alternative suggestions are
welcome.

TIA
