I have a stand-alone computer with a PPP connection to my ISP and would like to experiment with server programming. Can I do this using 127.0.0.1 (localhost) as my server and client ? I have some code that creates a ServerSocket and binds it to the localhost on port 6001 and blocks on the accept method waiting for a connection. I have some other code which creates a Socket that attempts to connect to port 6001 on localhost. Unfortunately, the ServerSocket doesn't appear to detect the connection (although the socket says that it connects) I guess the big question in this is can I do server programming with my current setup or do I need a real server ? I'm working on a linux box, with jdk1.1.7, by the way. Thanks ! P.S. Any suggestions on good networking programming books ?
