The serious flaw in your analogy being that I would never say something like that in the first place. It's more as if I said that Percival Lowell wrote detailed observations of Mars including seasonal changes in the appearance of parts of its surface and "canali" (channels), and the former was interpreted as vegetation and the latter was interpreted as "canals" by readers of his detailed notes, and someone accused me of stupidity and said that those observations were made by Galileo just for the sake of insulting me and disagreeing with me. :P
