Java, Swing and Memory

Hi,

i have following problem: a simple (empty) java JFrame uses, depending
on the frame size, more or less of the memory. For example, if I size
it to a size of 100 * 100 pixel, the memory use is about two or three
MB (with the JVM). If I go to full screen (1024 * 768 pixel), the
memory usage increase insteadly to about 12 MB. Therefore I have some
questions:

a) Does Swing/Java save each window as a bitmap in the memory? If I
put a edit control on the frame, the memory usage increases according
to the size of the edit field.

b) How can I reduce this memory usage? It would be the best, if I
could keep it on a constant amount. Does it work with a special look &
feel implementation? And if yes, is there one available?

c) Can I improve the performance of the gui components of swing?
Dragging a frame with a database table is really slow, either on a
Pentium III 500 MHz... :(.

Thanks for each advice ;).

Bye, Michael
