Hard to say for sure, but I know that J++ will also give errors for
unreachable statements (like that caused by the extra semicolon). While
it is a little annoying, at times, I do not know if throwing an error
here, as opposed to a warning, makes one compiler better than another.

As for the assigning chars to byte values, this is an error, and
JBuilder certainly should have been throwing warnings here. In English,
this is a simple enough step, but since Java uses Unicode, all
characters are 16-bits, and therefore cannot be properly represented as
a byte. You really should change these to using char, unless there is a
really pressing reason to stick with bytes.

If JBuilder did not even give warnings on these lines you listed, than
I would start to wonder a little about the quality of their compiler.
