Metrowerks to Provide Development Tools for Tao Group's High Performance
Platform for Consumer Appliances
CodeWarrior(r) Development Environment Combines with intent(r) Media
Platform to Enable High Speed Java Development on Multiple Targets
AUSTIN, Texas-May 30, 2001-Metrowerks is working with the Tao Group to
enable application and content development for Tao's intent(r), a high
performance, portable media platform for consumer appliances. Leveraging
its strengths in the wireless and consumer entertainment markets,
Metrowerks is providing CodeWarrior(r) development tools for the intent
platform, including the intent, Java(tm) Technology Edition, a Sun
Authorized Java(tm) compliant and branded engine that runs real world,
rich multimedia Java content extraordinarily fast and in very small
footprints.
Tao's intent provides a complete and portable framework that allows
developers to easily create multimedia content, such as 3D video games,
that run on connected digital appliances, even low-end client devices.
The Tao technology is used by many of the world's leading consumer
electronics manufacturers, including Sharp, JVC and Grundig.
"This agreement will give developers the opportunity to target a single
platform and reach a broad array of consumer appliances with
high-performance applications and content," said David Perkins,
president and CEO, Metrowerks. "Tao's software is being integrated as
core technology by world class OEMs -- many of whom already use
CodeWarrior -- for set-top boxes, PDAs, wireless phones, web tablets and
other appliances enabling a new generation of premium content for
consumers."
Under the agreement, Metrowerks' CodeWarrior Integrated Development
Environment (IDE), debugger, and Java compiler will combine with the Tao
SDK to allow developers to quickly create compelling multimedia content
and applications for Tao's high performance language independent
platform on a variety of consumer appliances.
Stated Francis Charig, Chairman of Tao, "Having a world-class tool chain
has been a fundamental requirement for Tao. Our tools partner,
Metrowerks, gives us the access to the content community, the global
presence, the reputation amongst the OEMs and, most important of all,
the quality and functionality of a product that the market desires. The
relationship with Metrowerks is already helping accelerate our company's
growth."
The intent suite is available as a binary portable content engine on
operating systems such as Windows(r) 95, Windows(r) 98, Windows(r) NT,
Windows(r) CE for MIPS, Linux(r), Embedded Linux, EPOC, VxWorks(r),
OS-9000(r) and Elate(r). Elate was designed by Tao from its inception
as a multimedia, deterministic operating system
The first CodeWarrior for intent products will be available in the
fourth quarter of 2001, following a beta program that will be launched
in the third quarter.
