For Immediate Release... UBC CONTINUING STUDIES ANNOUNCES SUITE OF NEW INTERNET COURSES APRIL 17, 1996, VANCOUVER, B.C.: Today the University of British Columbia announced four new Internet courses in Java and JavaScript programming starting in the Continuing Studies spring/summer term. Java and JavaScript are new Internet programming languages from Sun Microsystems and Netscape Communications that allow software applications to be distributed and run in real-time over the Internet's World Wide Web. "These new courses are designed for anyone interested in producing innovative and dynamic World Wide Web sites," said William Koty, Coordinator for Internet Programs and the UBC Certificate in Internet Publishing. "We offer a range of training solutions from conceptual foundation courses for non-programmers to high-end programming workshops for software engineers." New network-based applications created using Java and JavaScript, called "applets," are downloaded from Internet servers and run with popular web browsers such as Netscape's Navigator and Microsoft's Internet Explorer. "These applets allow Internet publishers to add computer animation and customized, interactive software programs to their Web sites that provide a wide range of applications from games, to personal finance tools, to business and communication products," explained Koty. Taught by Vancouver-based computer consultant Alan Ballard, the suite of courses include: - Java and JavaScript: Concepts and Capabilities - Introduction to Programming in JavaScript - Introduction to Java Programming for Non-C and C++ Programmers - Java for C and C++ Programmers Ballard has over 20 years experience in computer programming and has been teaching programming courses for UBC since 1980. UBC Continuing Studies is western Canada's leading provider of high-technology education and offers over 140 computer courses each term. The UBC Certificate in Internet Publishing is the first program of its kind in North America and includes specialized instruction on all aspects of Internet publishing.
