:A brief note: As far as I can tell, Every language that has become
:a widely used language has gone through a stage when it was given away
:free(in alphabetical order):
I'm assuming you mean compilers instead of specs.

:	Basic: On Chips and from Dartmouth and even Bill G's first publication
Do you mean Gates' Altair BASIC? Wasn't free at something like $400...
(in 1974!)
:	FORTRAN, COBOL: Bundled with IBM Mainframes in 50's & 60's
FORTRAN is free with GNU's g77 and f2c. I don't know if I would call your
example ``free'', however. When you buy a car, do you think you get, say,
the seats and windows for free?
:	LISP: several, including IBM Mainframe... XLISP,...
GNU has GCL, and of course there's elisp...
:	HTML: Lynx/Mosaic
A language? I'm not going to start this flamewar again. Besides, you're
forgetting all the other free browsers.
And if HTML goes in here, you'l have to put TeX in.
:	Pascal: from UCSD and (*memory failure*) Switzerland
And GNU's GPC.
:Mail me if you have an example of a computer language which has a large
:user base and has never been given away free.
Again, I don't think COBOL counts in your example above as free,
so I'll postulate that. Maybe some of the database languages like
Clipper? Seems to be pretty popular.
