There are several books that detail the way MS-DOS came about and its relationship to CP/M. I think Gates bought a CP/M clone from a guy in Seattle who practically single-handedly ported it to his own make of machine- and it was for 8086, not 8088 and it worked at least a year or two before IBM/DOS machines came out... But anyways, as far as credit goes, I think the folks at Digital Reseach certainly deserve some; they wrote the system that the Seattle fellow aped. It was nice of DR to be so open and un-lawyer-on-your-throatish, really???
