UCSD p-system was a Pascal compiler that generated an object file of pseudo code (p-code). This resulting file was run through a runtime module that tranlated the code into executable code on a given "target" computer. In order to implement the p-system on any computer all that you had to do was write a runtime module that would tranlate the p-code and execute it on that computer. This technique has been used by Ryan-McFarland in their compilers for years. ( Now Liant ). In fact, R-M did some of the early IBM compilers for the S/360 in the 1960's. These were compiler/runtime combos, also. Although JAVA looks to be a good idea, it is NOT NEW!!! Larry Woods
