There is a good chance that all *real* languages survive. I have to agree with you there. When we aren't talking about Java or paying homage to Smalltalk, all of us tend to say "Use an appropriate language for your problem." That is, we believe that people should use a language that has been optimized for the parameters that are important for the problem domain. That is why most AI programs are written in LISP and most operating systems in C. The idea that a language (Java) that has been optimized for speed of transmission of binaries over the Internet will rule all applications, forever, is bizarre. Java is a fine new language that will be used in many situations. The creation of a new language that makes it is a rare event and a cause for celebration. But it isn't going to kill off everything else. If Smalltalk dies, it is more likely to be because the Smalltalk vendors care more about single-quarter profitability than they do about marketshare. Java will only be an innocent bystander. -- -Doug Shaker Email: dshaker@smalltalk.com The Smalltalk Store Voice: 1-415-854-5535 405 El Camino Real, Box 106 http://www.smalltalk.com/welcome.html Menlo Park, CA 94025,USA Fax: 1-415-854-2557
