Most Commonly used Languages

I intend, time permitting, to familiarise myself with a number of
programming languages in an effort to gain some part time employment. Of
course I want to familiarize myself with those languages that are used the
most in industry. I have a reasonable number of hours up programming in the
procedural languages BASIC and Turing (Pascal like). I have had an
introduction to non-procedural programming in general.

Although this may be in a FAQ, I couldn't find it and so here goes.
I would like to know to what extent different languages are used in
different areas of the softare industry and what they are most commonly
used for. I would also like to know of good references for a description
of these languages. I prefer texts that have _detailed_ descriptions of the
programming constructs rather than those which introduce constructs by
example. Nethertheless, I do recognize the need for examples to show how the
constructs can be used.

Because this discussion may become more subjective than objective, please
mail all beliefs/observations/insights directly to me. I will summarise the
results in a couple of weeks time.

    Thanks,
