Berating the GPM WWW Site

Australia must have the slowest connection to "the rest of the world"
existing. *WHY* don't you mirror your damned website, so that a fellow
can read it at a reasonable pace? And would someone please smack the
damned fool who designed the Linux version of the GPM documentation
upside the head, hard? It's a severe pain in the ascii to flip back and
forth through endless ONE-PARAGRAPH! links.

Get a clue, guys. The reality is that you're one a dead-slow connection,
and playing silly buggers with yoru website just annoys hell out of
anyone who's giving consideration to your product.

Hello David,

Did you ever hear about "Nettiquette"? Reading your posting, I doubt.
If you show this attidude in face-to-face conversation, someone might
respond by giving you a bang on the ear... (Sorry couldn't resist)

As you don't seem to be a GPM customer that pays for license and support
(judging from "Linux" in your posting), you should be happy to have such
a good compiler for free. Support for this compiler is quite good even for
free versions, and if you ask the developing team for certain things, they'll
usually help you (i.e. updating the libs from aout to ELF format)

BTW: Why don't you get the docs in PostScript or Tex from their ftp-sites:
     primary ftp-site: ftp://ftp.fit.qut.edu.au/pub/gpm
     mirror ftp-site:	ftp://ftp.psg.com/pub/modula-2/gpm

Yah, well, after spending some 45+ minutes farqing around on their
poorly-designed website and coming up empty, I feel like giving someone
over there a bang on the ear.

Hell, I _don't_ have their compiler for free; in 45 minutes of poking
around, I was barely able to find out whether it was even plausible to
use their compiler. Downloading the thing scares heck out of me; it'd
take eons.

The flame stands. Their site is hell on anyone outside of Australia.

They need to redesign their doumentation, so that one doesn't spend an
eternity accessing it paragraph by paragraph.

They need to get a mirror site off their continent, so that the documents
can be read in a timely fashion.

Isn't their stuff mirrored at ftp.psg.com? If it isn't, I am sure randy
would willingly do it for them.

'eh? Actually, I do believe GPM is mirrored to a site closer to
the U.S.. That's where I got my copy of GPM. I forget it 'tho. I found
the mirror by checking out one of the many Modula-2 related links on the
Web ... some dude put a link to it on his page.

As for the documentation ... you gotta be kidding me! Unless
you're speaking of the HTML version, I find the documentation for GPM
excellent ... especially for the price (free). Really well done. Go get
your self the PostScript version and a copy of GhostScript and see for
yourself!

I guess there's just no pleasing some people. Man, you shouldn't
be complaining considering what you get for the price. The whole GPM
package for Linux is a rather excellent, IMHO.

Actually, I find the connections to Australian sites to be
pretty fast ;-). My nomination for "slowest connection to the
rest of the world" would have to go to Canada.

Look, the fact is that mirrors of popular sites exist only
because someone volunteers to set up and maintain the mirror.
If you want a mirror in, for example, Canada, then it has to
be done from the Canadian end. I doubt that the GPM people
own any computers over there. What you need to do is to
write to them and volunteer to give them a mirror. While
you're at it, you might perhaps volunteer to rewrite the
Linux documentation. The quality of any free resource
obviously depends on how much time the volunteers are
prepared to put into it.

Do the GPM people read this newsgroup? I'm not sure. You're
probably talking to the wrong people. A more constructive
approach would be to e-mail someone in the GPM team with
whatever suggestions you have. But make sure that they're
constructive suggestions; generalised bitching in a belligerent
tone is the best way to ensure that you're ignored.

I don't have any connection with the GPM people, by the way.

Arrrgh! They should be making sure that this is mentioned a few times on
their site, then. I could have saved a lot of time going "local".

Don't forget the inverse: to people in Australia and New Zealand,
web sites based Canada and the US are extremely slow. Does _your_
web page have an off-continent mirror?

Until more trans-oceanic fiber is laid, it's good policy to
seek out mirror arrangements. And yes, as you suggest, advertise
them on the intro screen. but remember, this works both ways.

Part of the problem is finding other sites willing to mirrow yours.
