ETH Zurich announces MacOberon System 3 Release 2.04Γ. MacOberon System 3 Release 2.04 is the first official distribution of the Oberon System 3 that runs both on customary 68k-based computers and on modern PowerPC RISC machines with native speed. For that purpose, we introduced a novel technique that we call SLIM BINARIES. Slim binaries are a new form of object files that contain no object code at all, but a portable description of a module's contents that makes these files completely independent of the eventual target machine. Object code generation is carried out on-the-fly by the module loader and depends on the underlying hardware! In addition, we made some changes to adjust the MacOberon distribution to the "Spirit of Oberon" distribution. These changes primarily concern a new common filenaming convention. The archives are available via anonymous ftp from ftp.inf.ethz.ch in directory /pub/software/Oberon/System3/Macintosh/ +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Thomas Kistler Phone: +41 1 632 73 46 | | Institute for Computer Systems Fax: +41 1 632 13 07 | | ETH-Zentrum, RZ H8 e-mail: kistler@inf.ethz.ch | | CH-8092 Zuerich, Switzerland | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
