read failure creating dbf-files

Folks,

I have hit on a strange problem: in the process of fixing corrupted
Memofields in a DBF-File I tried a lot of variants but ended up in
"manually" copying the records over to a new file. (repeatably) after about
66000 records an exception "read failure on <destination file> gets thrown.
Completely not understanding what's happening (but having experienced a
similar problem which disappeared by repetition) I tried to continue the
copy-over-process by restarting at the first uncopied record. This works
nicely - but only for about 8 of those. Then the same happens. I coud now do
this for the rest but this would need several hundred restarts which does
not sound interesting :-)

Searching in Deja I found several description of similar behaviour in BDE
4.something or so in 1997 or so but no solution, however this is BDE 5.1 and
Delphi 4 Updatepack 2 (doubtfull that nr 3 will help but I will try) which
makes me wonder.

Anybody having a decent hint (except moving away from DBF-files which
clearly is one of the medium term options)?

Peter
