DB connection - ODBC question!

Hi folks,
I am writing an application to perform a search and replace on the
field values of a table; it is useful when a simple sql command would
not be able to perform it: for example, if all the department codes
'D%' have to be changed to 'DEP%', sql doesn't do that.

My idea is to make the software able to connect to all the databases
(maybe not all, but al least few!), so I thought to connect to
different dbs through an odbc object; I tried with ADO components,
they are ok for Access, dBase, but I am not able to connect to
Interbase (I don't know about other dbs, I haven't tried yet!). In
addiction I don't want to connect to the dbs using BDE, because you need
to have/buy it to use the program.

What I am looking for are suggestions on how to connect to different
dbs without relying on BDE or other Non-free tools.

Thanks in advance,
Fabio

PS: the search and replace utility is free!

ADO will give you access to a number of databases and other data sources via
OLE DB, including SQL Server. It can also access any database that you have
(or can beg, borrow or steal) drivers for.
