hi,

i am working with delphi 4 and btrieve files via ODBC interface. i have
a problem with updating or
deleting a record from a table using dbnavigator. error message being
'couldn't perform edit because
another user changed the record' this doesn't seems to make sense as i
am working in a single user
environment. could anyone help me? thanks in advance!!

Hi,

First sorry my (very) bad English.

I have experienced this exact error message.
Probably you have this situation:

  Table1 (customer)
  Fields: customer-id, etc...

  Table2 (invoice)
  Fields: customer-id, invoice-id, delivery-customer-id,
delivery-address-name, etc...
  MasterSource: Table1
  Masterfield: customer-id

  delivery-name is 'Lookup' to Table1 and table2 is table1 detail.

  Master  --------   Detail
  Table1  --------> Table2
             <-----------|  Table2 Field Lookup

This causes error!!!
Delphi abort update and delete because field lookup change table1 position
and table1 change table2 position.(Looping situation)

My experience is that this happens when you edit a record twice in
succession, which as far as your database and the BDE are concerned, is two
different users.  eg:

    with Table1 do begin
        Edit;
        ...
        Post;
        Edit;
        ...
        Post;        --- crash here
    end;

the only way around this is to make sure you do a Refresh between the first
Post and the second Edit. This could be tricky if you are talking about
DBNavigator or DBGrid doing it. Maybe you will have to enforce a Refresh in
the AfterPost event.
