Hi,
First of all. Please do NOT respond in the newsgroup. I'd much rather
have you respond directly to my email at dbenner@pacbell.net. Let's not
wasted further newsgroup bandwidth.
I'm just finishing up my second book. It's in C++ and is called, "Learn
Archiving and Compression Programming with Visual C++ 98". Now, I know
this is a Delphi newsgroup, so please bear with me.
Personally, I *PREFER* working in Delphi, but the editors wanted the C++
version rather than the Delphi version I originally proposed. However,,
as I was writing the C++ version, I also wrote the Delphi code and the
Delphi specific chapters and have saved the whole book to another
directory. What I'd *LIKE* to do is convert the book to both PDF and
HTML and create a book-on-CD-ROM specific to Delphi. What I would like
from you is direct feedback as to whether you would be willing to buy
this book-on-CD. Please send your opinion directly to my email address.
I do NOT want to see a big long thread here in the newsgroup.
OK. If you've gotten this far, you'd probably like to know what's
covered in the book.
I'm giving detailed coverage of SQ (from the CP/M days), TAR, ARC, PAK,
ZIP, ZOO, LHARC, ARJ and Microsoft's new CAB file format. Each archive
is given it's own chapter and each chapter presents code to read and
write archives of the given type. Further, a generic SFX module is
presented that allows the user to create self-extracting versions of all
the above archives. The CD will also give a simple archive manager that
can be used as a standalone application.
If you've needed to add archiving capability to your application, this
is the CD for you. If you are interested, please email me your mailing
address. The CD won't be ready until around January 1st, 1998. I'm
currently expecting to ask $30 plus $5 s&h for US and Canada sales. I'm
requesting an additional $5 for shipment elswhere. However, if you want
it shipped overnight, no matter where you live, please add $10 to the
cost.
I do not expect payment at this time!!!! I just want your mailing
address so that I can notify you when the CD is physically set up and
ready to ship. I'll ask you at that time for a payment. But, to keep
everything straight, here's the price breakdown:
Shipped to: US & Canada Elsewhere
CD-ROM book-on-disc $30 $30 (All costs in US dollars)
Shipping & Handling $ 5 $10
--------- --------
Two-day shipping total $35 $40
Overnight Surcharge $10 $10
--------- --------
Overnight Shipping total $45 $50
Again, if you are interested, please email me directly with your email
and mailing address information. Do NOT send money at this time!
Send to dbenner@pacbell.net

I'm interested in the topic - though I don't think there are many reasons to use any archive formats other than zip (with an existing zlib and java.util.zip). What I don't like is reading large amounts of text on the monitor, so I think it's better to use a format like pdf, which can easily be printed. Regards, Marco
