The Mac (don't ask me why) requires that the boot sector of a volume contains certain identifying info for that volume to be bootable, ie. a startup volume. There are two ways of getting that info onto the boot sector: 1. Do what FWB (or any similar HD utility) asks and flag the volume as bootable. or 2. Use the Mac installer to put a System Folder on the volume. Some HD formatters make all disks bootable, some don't. If your's doesn't, and you just copy a System Folder onto the volume without using the Installer, there's a good chance it won't boot. -- Peter Kerr bodger School of Music chandler University of Auckland neo-Luddite
