??  They do work at a genetic level, how do you think they reproduce  ??
Retroviridae actually integrate into your DNA, which is why they are used
in genetic engineering and potential future gene therapy.  Still the virus
has to get into the cell first!

Or are you suggesting a non-selective cellular infection followed by
selective genomic integration based on DNA sequence specificity?
Of course that kind of sequence specific integration can be achieved in
certain systems (re: homologous recombination in yeast and homologous
recombination in the targetting of embryonic stem cells to produce
transgenic mice), but it's too messy.

If all the suppositions postulated here about virus creation (there isn't
a Virus Creation Lab of the biological world!) then we would have the
perfect system for gene-therapy, a cure for cancer and the ability to
specifically deliver drugs to the point of action.  Which would be very
nice, but doesn't EXIST!
