Perl/Unix/W3-mSQL HELP!!!!!!

Hi,

My name is Patrick and need some advise on Unix.

I need to learn Perl/Unix/W3-mSQL because I want to setup a Internet-Site on a
Unix server.
I'am all-ready online, and my domainname is: WWW.INTERNED.NL.
I have rent 10 Mb on a server, operating system Unix, HTTP server ncsa httpd 1.5.

For me as an experienced DOS/Windows freak is it not easy to start in the other
world known as Unix.

The unix server supports Perl, and a RDBMS interface called W3-mSQL.

So I tried to find some information about Perl. I found two books, CGI Programming
with Perl in a week and a other book called starting Perl. I started to read the
books and tried to run a script on the server, and the only response I have got is
Error 500 Wrong Header.

My provider advised me to buy the book Programming Perl. I have ordered the book,
but I'am still waiting for it. Mean while I can't do anything.

Is their anybody who can give me some tips and if possible a sample script in
Perl (with W3-mSQL)?

If you know another RDBMS or data storing technic I would appreciate to hear it.
If you can advise me on a book I need to buw concerning Perl or W3-mSQL I like to
hear that too.

The unix commands that I need are limited. I only need CHMOD, and all the other
things I do with FTP software. I do have some trouble with TAR and GNU.
Is their an menu program available, like WINZIP, so I can simple unpack programs?

I hope someone can help me,

Thanks,

Patrick

It seems to be an HTML Syntax Error

What about buying a book like "UNIX for beginners". On most Unix systems you will find
MANPAGES. You can type: man <command> and you should get a lot of information.

The easiest thing to do for Linux is to get a cdrom. I use Slackware myself...

Secondly, there is a perl interpreter for DOS. Check out shareware.com on the
www and search for perl.

Hope this helps!

Perl/Unix on a 386

Hello Everybody

I'd like to learn unix and perl. The point is however that I'm working under windows on a 386. My question
therefore is twofold.

First, I'd like to run unix or linux on it as well. Can I download a (simple) version of them somewhere ? And
how would I proceed then; can I download under windows or dos and from there install the program ?

Second, if there is no solution to the first problem, is there a perl-interpreter that runs under dos/windows
and if so can I download it from somewhere ?

Thanks in advance,

Milko Kretschmann.

linux is the most popular freeware version of unix.
u can download it but it is better if you buy it on CDRoms, some of those
CD editions come on as many as 5 cd's. meaning they are not compressed,
meaning you can work from the CDRom player (albeit slowly), meaning you
do not have to have a huge hard disk.

if you just need certain UNIX a utility, like perl, sed, etc
most of those are available under project gnuish, & even before & after
the inception of project gnuish.

surf the web. SIMTEL has a subdirectory dos\gnuish.

the biggest file of UNIX for dos, could be emacs (several megs) followed by
sh or ksh or bash (less than a meg, zipped). But not everyone is crazy
about those.

: Second, if there is no solution to the first problem, is there a perl-interpreter that runs under dos/windows

:
yes.
there might even be a newsgroup for perl, you may like to post
there, if u cannot find/like its faq.

if you know SIMTEL, OAK or other shareware web sites, you can sure download
perl 4 or perl 5.

Happy perling
!

Yes. You will have to repartition your disk, though, to make room for the
new operating system. This usually means reinstalling your DOS partition.

>how would I proceed then; can I download under windows or dos and from there install the program ?

One place to start is the FreeBSD web site. Take a look at

	http://www.ca.freebsd.org/handbook/

for an introduction to FreeBSD -- a UNIX variant derived from 4.4BSD.

While you can install FreeBSD via the Internet I would recommend that
you purchase the CD and install from that, unless you are very comfortable
configuring SLIP/PPP links and the associated routing table entries manually.
If the machine is (or can be) directly connected to the Internet (i.e.
you can stick it on an Internet-connected Ethernet) then installing over
the net is a breeze.

You can download Linux if you really want to from a few places
on the Internet. Have a look at http://www.linux.org for a good
place to start with Linux information. I would recommend you
buy a CD-ROM version, many such versions can be had for $US20 (40 G)
or less.

I can't remember the actual name, but there is a version of Linux which
installs in a dos partition. It does not have the full functionality of
a propper install, but would be a good starting point to wet your
interest. Try asking around the Linux newsgroups for further info.

Just get Partition Magic. No need to resinstall dos at all.

Better yet, Buy a book on Linux that comes with a CD. It'll come in real
handy. Also, check out the Linux newsgroups:

comp.os.linux.hardware
comp.os.linux.setup
comp.os.linux.x
etc......

It is called the UMSDOS install! In older Slackware distibutions, you
used a special set of install boot and root disks. They are marked on
the distribution. It works quite well, but a bit slowly because you
are working through the dos file system.

One other point. Linux will run quite nicely on a 386, even a 386sx,
but it should have at least 8 meg of memory for any version, including
the UMSDOS variety. If you don't have the memory, now is a great time
to buy it, with prices at $10 a meg or less.

I have tried several times over the past year or so to make the DOS
versions of perl work properly. My _opinion_ is that it is probably a
waste of time to mess around with perl in the DOS side of things.

Fortunately I have Linux and FreeBSD on my machine at home, and
can do my perl stuff there. I would be very nice to be able to hack
on my Win95 laptop, but so far I am not optomistic about the chances
of that.

If anyone has been using perl successfully under DOS, please correct
me!

If you feel brave, sure :-)

If you plan to use the generic FreeBSD/DOS tools, though, plan on
doing a manual (of sorts) repartition.
