Want info on DVI files

I have a FORTRAN subroutine that I use to plot graphs. It produces a
postscript file that can be printed. I now want to change the program
so as to be able to use the DVI2PS converters available for various
printers. Where would I get info as to what the DVI format really is?
Any references?
Thank you.
