Hi-
We're running an ancient version of Transcript (vintage 1985 or
thereabouts, I think -- the RCS version in psint.sh says v2.1). At any rate,
this ancient version apparently doesn't grok the %%Begin(End)Setup comments.
This, in turn, has the effect of screwing up the page order reversal of
anything that has such a section (DSC v2.1 and later)--it gets dropped because
psrv doesn't know where to put it. The problem is easily fixed by using recent
software or using a printer that doesn't require the page reversal, as we
normally do, but that's not really the point of my questioning...
Now, I have application code that generates PostScript output. I can set a
switch that specifies what version of the DSC to conform to, so I can get
around the problem, by setting it to 2.0. What I'm curious about is the time
frames involved with the DSC versions and corresponding Transcript releases.
Does any one have a table of what Transcript release came out when and which
versions of the DSC they purported to understand? As to the DSC/EPSF versions,
I can find this info from documents I have around here:
PS-Adobe-1.0: 1985/1986 [original Red Book copyright]
EPSF-1.2: March 1987
PS-Adobe-2.0: ?????
PS-Adobe-2.1: January 1989
EPSF-2.0: January 1989
PS-Adobe-3.0: 1990 [last copyright on 2nd ed Red Book]
Can others be filled in?
The reason I'm curious about the dates is to help decide what the default
DSC level should be for this code. If a significant number of people will have
problems with the generated PS code, I may opt for an older version as
default. It may be useful for making recommendations to users based on what
software they are running. If PS-Adobe-2.1 is dated January 1989, is it
reasonable to assume that practically everyone will be able to handle at least
DSC 2.1?
Thanx,
