According to the Code 39 spec (Intermec Jan, 1982):
"The nominal inter-character gap may be between one and three
times the nominal width of a narrow element, or 0.060 inches,
whichever is greater".
Removing the code above changes the gap from three times the
narrow width to one times the narrow width. Both should be
generally readable.
It seems to be hardware dependent. The following code:
/C { 1 inch .015 inch barcode 0.5 inch 0 rmoveto } def
1 inch 7 inch moveto
(*)C (A)C (B)C (C)C (D)C (E)C (*)C
.. which generates 0.5 inch gaps between characters is readable
on Percon 385 readers, but not on Symbol LDT/LRT readers. The Symbol
readers seem to require a gap less than 6 times the narrow width.
