There is sample code in chapter 8 of the Green Book (PS Program Language Design) telling you how to read large images using "currentfile" and "readhexstring" *if* you want to put all your data in your *.ps file. I want to keep my data in a separate file. It is bad enough having to convert binary files to hex, but to have to put postscript code and data in the same file is annoying. I have tried using "(file_name) (r) file" and this has refused to work. I have tried various permutations and a typical error is "invalidfileaccess", which is a good clue but does not solve the mystery. I am using xpsview (an Adobe product) on an Iris Indigo. I even managed to crash the window manager last night. In section 3.8.2 of the Red Book (PS Reference Manual) it is said "the detailed semantics of the file system operators, particularly file-naming conventions, are operating system dependent". Does someone have the three lines of code that has successfully opened, read and displayed an image with data in a separate file on a UNIX machine (I cannot believe that the Indigo is special)? Many thanks. Wayne Boucher (wb104@mbuf.bio.cam.ac.uk) PS: I know that binary data is not portable, but if Adobe is willing to put out a product like xpsview for a UNIX machine then why not add some decent i/o capabilities?
