problem printing from PS file

I have a HP LaserJet IIp with a Pacific Page PS emulator cartridge. If I
send output from my plotting package directly to the printer then everything
works fine. However, if I send the output to a file, and then copy this
file to the printer, my printer will not print the page (I get a timeout after
a few minutes).

Is there a simple reason for this? I'm trying to do an electronic submittal
to the physics journal Physical Review but I can't even get my file to print
on my own printer!

Thanks for any help you can provide.
