problem including postscript with dvips

I've got a problem with a postscript file produced by MacpaintII.

I think it was running on system7.

...

When this file is included in a TeX document (dvips 5.490)
the resulting postscript is quite problematic.

Interestingly enough, it prints out fine under ghostscript, and
on a LPS40. The problem is that on an LaserwriterII, the included
postscript erases the current page, and the only output on that
page is the subsequent TeX output (i.e. text following the included
postscript file.

---
Blah, blah, blah. % <- gets erased.

\begin{center}
\mbox{\epsffile[96 375 504 745]{fig1.ps}}
\end{center}

Blah, blah, blah. % <- this prints out
---

I've tried *everything* to get this file to work, but the Mac postscript
prolog seems almost to be shrouded code :-). Anyone ever include
MacPaintII postscript (into a tex document using dvips) successfully???

Thanks in advance.

JHH
