It is one of the most bizarre things about the IIg, but it really does not seem to support 38400 baud. Why Apple elected to drop support for this most basic of speeds while being sure to include the ever so useful 3600 and 7200 is beyond me. It is one of the more baffling and frustrating things about this printer. The only thing more frustrating is that the serial port performance is aobut HALF that of the II NTX at the same baud rate. Now how Apple could manage to screw up the implementation of something as simple as a serial port is beyond me. I guess they figured that only type of computers out there are Macs that use LocalTalk. Oh yea, and they quietly removed Zaph-Digbats from the set of ROM fonts. As for the SPARCstation 2, I don't believe that you can get it to go faster than 38400 without hacking on the kernel/device driver. I haven't seen a SS10 yet, so I don't know whether Sun has added intrisic support for higher baud rates. I kind of doubt it, but what with the ISDN stuff, I guess there is always a chance. --Marc Ullman Stanford University
