Uneven spaced characters with ATM!!

I have a Mac IIcx connected to a HP DeskWriter and use ATM for printing
but I notice that the characters are not evenly spaced on the paper. And
sometimes they even touch each other when they're not supposed to. What's
wrong with ATM? (Because this problem does not occur using the HP printer
fonts).
