Hello. I hope this is the right newsgroup for this question. Please
email me your answers (if any) and I'll summarize.

A while ago I was trying to get a postscript version of the GNU emacs
manual, and I got it from the GNU emacs ftp site and had all sorts of
problems printing it. If fact, it wouldn't print at all. I bewailed my
fate on the comp.emacs group and some kind person sent me a postscript
emacs manual file that printed no problem. But, in the interests of
helping out GNU, and clearing up the mystery, I'd like to find out
what was wrong with the file I downloaded from their ftp site and let
them know, or, alternitively, find out what I did wrong. For the sake
of this question, file1 is the file I got from the GNU ftp site, which
was supposed to be a ps manual, but didn't print. File2 is the one I
got from someone's computer (still using ftp), which did print.

To head off the inevitable, yes, I used binary mode when ftping file1,
and I did it twice (thinking I might have made a mistake the first
time, or that it somehow was corrupted in the first transmission).
Also I ftp'd file2 the exact same way, and it worked like a charm.

Here's the error message I get mailed to me if I try to print file1:

Your printer job (emacs-18.57.ps)
could not be printed

Messages from output filter:

This looks like the beginning of the file I'm trying to print. Here's
the beginning of file2, the one that works:

It looks quite different! Is the first one not a postscript file after all?
